Sleep??????
« on: July 17, 2009, 12:22:19 PM »
Hello,I have had a lot of anxiety lately and I have been more self aware, I get songs stuck in my head on repeat that go on and on and I am always monitoring my thoughts...
Lately when I am falling asleep, I will notice voices in my head-not coming from outside of it...just random sentences and words and random things that make no sense, then I will either fall asleep or wake myself and be like that's not real...it is only when I am falling asleep....Almost like I am starting to dream and I am "setting up" a scenario.

I read about something called a hypnagogia...which says this is a normal sleep state and occurs in everyone, some pick up on it and others have already reached REM and don't notice it!

Anyone else get this???

Hawk ,
First thing is not to freak out over this. I get this too when I lack sleep.  You are probably having a hard time getting any sleep because of your anxiety level these days . Then that increases when you don't sleep so its a vicious cycle.  Ride this out though and remember that these thoughts and songs that keep replaying in your head will go away once you get 1 solid nights sleep. It will come soon though. Your mind can only go on so long with this cycle before it exhausts itself.  After about 4 -6 days of this pattern you are in , you'll get a good REM night in when your mind apparently "gives up" on trying to figure out the problems in your life and demands sleep.

Also , get to a bookstore and buy Dr.Maas' book titled "Power sleep"  It talks about allllll that you are describing from lack of sleep.

Hi Hawk!

Yes, the hypnagogic state can be weird and wonderful! It tends to make our racing thoughts, etc. more potent, intense and real. This is why it can be such a great state to get to with meditating/spiritual practices. I get the "setting-up" scenario all of the time. In fact, once I recognized what it was, I actually welcome it now and try to get into the hypnagogic state on purpose. Because you can be very suggestible, it's a great time for positive visualization and setting yourself up for good dreams!

If the lack of sleep is really getting to you, maybe talk to your doctor about trying a mild sedative or an anti-anxiety thing like Ativan. If you tend to like the natural approach (and I surely prefer it), try to get some good exercise in during the day, do not eat past ~8:00 (depending on your bedtime) and do calming things before bed (which definitely means getting off the computer)!

Like tigerpaw said, a good sleep is very important to your overall wellbeing.

Yep I have heard bird chirps before. To this day, I still don't know whether or not they are actually from a bird. I've actually heard them since I was a little girl- my mom used to tell me I was being silly.
