I shouldn't be here.....
« on: July 17, 2009, 09:12:27 AM »
Hi, my psyc told me to run away from everything which has to do with illness, death etc, but I need some reassurance! I am again very worried on pancreatic, I have no pain, only some feeling in my abdomen but I am being very hungry and when I stArt eating I get slightly nauseated. What can this be? I've been to the doctor last week and he examined me and said my abdomen is fine.

Your symptoms seem more attributable to anxiety, maybe some reflux, allergies
or post nasal drip. I know of someone who has pancreatic cancer and their symptoms
are nothing like yours. This person is still alive today, over 4 years after diagnosis.
He had the Whipple procedure and seems to be doing OK.

A doctor told you last week that you are fine, you need to dig deep and reassure yourself now.  Nausea IS a common anxiety symptom, but you knew this already.  Live life as a person who has been diagnosed with anxiety, not as a person about to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  Work on recovering from the real disease you have.

I don't know how old Marc's friend is, but aunt's husband is in his late 60's.  He has pancreatic cancer.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

Your psych is a smart cookie! I find AnxietyZone can be a two edged sword- on the one hand, it can be extremely reassuring and actually quite genuinely healing, so long as you read the right posts! But there was a period where my HA was particularly bad and I had to take a short break because my beasty was latching onto all kinds of new illnesses to have here.

The incidence of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer under age 50 is probably around 0.5/100,000 or something. It just does not happen. Particularly if you doctor was able to examine your abdomen and find nothing.

I'm another who shouldn't be here.  I was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2002, and had the Whipple surgery on January 30th of that year.  Here I am seven and a half years later and while the word "cured" can never be used with cancer I certainly feel that way.  I had my 79th birthday last month and also have COPD and have had problems with Panic attacks in the past but at this point that is almost history.  I had a  very rough several years after the Whipple Procedure but at this point I can eat almost anything, just in smaller portions and have no pain or after effects from the surgery.  I have a feeling there is something I need to do and that's why I'm still here; maybe it just doing what I am doing now. By telling everyone that is a light at the end of that long dark tunnel maybe I can help someone with the fears that come up.  When asked for advice I only can suggest to stay positive as that is the only thing that will work.
