12 yr old with bowel incontinence
« on: July 10, 2009, 10:22:54 AM »
My 12 yr old daughter has anxiety issues along with IBS as well as gerd. I think it is sort of a vicious circle. Her anxiety aggravates the IBS and gerd and the digestive problems just aggravate the anxiety. AAAHHH!!!! Anyway, she was not having problems with the IBS much until again just very recently (however, she has always had problems with urgency of the bowels- needs to be 2 steps from a bathroom because can not hold it for more than 5 minutes). Yesterday, there was a very disconcerting incident. She went to the bathroom, called me in and she had had an accident in her underwear that she had no knowledge of until she had to visit the bathroom. She had not had an urge to have a BM or anything. I am very frustrated because we even traveled to a town 3 hrs away this yr for a gastro specialist (he was a quack and a rude arrogant SOB- long story but I know you would agree). We were just to the general practicioner yesterday who thinks this is no big concern. I said that she has a camp to go to in a month and she needs something for her bowels so that she does not have BM accidents. Can you imagine being her age and how mean kids can be? I think the upcoming camp may be causing her anxiety. She is on zoloft which seems to help with social anxiety but also seems to cause sleep problems. Yesterday, the doc prescribed clonazepam for sleep. I am not thrilled about another drug. I decided we will try melatonin for a week or so to see if that helps with sleep before going to the clonazepam. She is on a dairy-restricted diet- has been tested for gluten intolerance (negative). She takes prevacid for the gerd. She is also on a high fiber diet. She is borderline for aspergers. Any ideas/ suggestions?

I think you are right; the camp may be causing her anxiety. I would try an
alternative heath practitioner and see what they say to do.
