Great advice from my psych
« on: June 25, 2009, 02:11:15 AM »
Ok, so I got some great advice today. First, everyone needs to look into a book called "Don't sweat the small stuff" by a man named Richard Carlson I think. Secondly he said that it is good for people with OCD or GAD to try learning methods of discarding thoughts. Negative ones that is. I'm supposed to work on that with my therapist, as they can help. And also he says keeping active and busy, as well as hobbies and excercise, really is the best way to fight these things most the time...and I agree. he said the best thing you can do is stay busy and not mull on negative things  Great advice!

I agree 100% on the exercise! I am starting to exercise more and have been lowering my dose of medication and I feel fine and the bad thoughts are staying away. I hope this keeps up since the side effects of the medication suck and I would prefer not to have to take them.

I think the staying busy really helps, but I'm not sure. This is something to talk to a therapist about.

I think the thoughts themselves are fine, you don't need to change those, because those will happen. What you CAN change is the next thought that comes in to your mind or the next action. Tell the thoughts who's boss. Say "I know I would never do that" "I love my daughter"... etc
