Hi

Has anyone here has ever developed an INTOLERANCE to alcohol over time so that while you were younger you were more able to tolerate it but as you got older (and the more/longer you drank year after year), the worse your hangovers/symptoms became and the longer it took you to recover from a hangover?.

Unfortunately thats a sign that you may have developed a serious physical addiction to alcohol. I was going through that before I quit. I found out that if I gave myself a year or so of and was REAL careful with my intake after that my system worked itself out. For me It happened when I was a beer drinker. After I got on the hard stuff I had similar symptoms. I now find myself quiting every week and relapsing one of two days during that week but I make sure I only buy half pints instead of fifths!

Excellent reply. In my 20's I used to be able to drink a whole case of suds, fall asleep and wake up the next morning with enough energy to paint an entire skyscraper or something. I think the the increased ferocity of the hangovers has a lot to do with age and also the "wearing down" affect that years of drinking has on the body. Like I've heard a lot of people say, evenutally your body just let's you know that it has "had enough". I'm the same as you (beer drinker) and I tend to go a week/skip a week but even after a few beers anymore, I still end up with a huge hangover and loads of anxiety.

One week on, one week off didn't work for me I had to go six to eight months before my system righted itself. Eventually I hope to be off it all togwether. Right now it's too easy for me to pour myself a drink when the job gets me down  or the finances send me into a panic or the wife yells at me for something. As soon as I can figure you how to get my anxiety undercontrol I hope I can turn my back on alcohol all together.

Greygoose,

I think having less tolerance for alcohol as you get older is normal, even if you aren't a heavy drinker. I could put my body through just about anything in my 20's and get up the next day and head off to work. That's not true now, in my 30's. I am an occasional drinker and if I have too much to drink it takes me a couple of days to feel normal now. I've heard lots of people around my age comment on how they can't drink like they used to. I think it's a good thing, saves you all kinds of money and makes you a much cheaper date.  :happy0151:

The older I get, the more I seem to not want to drink anything.  I was like that for me what I quit smoking.  For along time the "joy" of smoking dimished until, well I did quit, with the aide of the nicotine patch.  I just wish there was a patch for that! lol

take care, ladyK
