Pre Surgery Jitters
« on: September 26, 2006, 04:21:16 PM »
I am new here.  I read another post by 'Another Newbie' posted in May that really rang a bell with me. the poster had the nightmare of colon cancer come true, but it had turned out ok. In my case I hope for that too. The key words for me were polyp, non invasive and encapsulated.  However I am terrified of surgery, anasthetic, finding something else.....  I go to the surgeon for a consult in 3 days time. My son suggested demanding a CT scan to make sure 'there is nothing else in there'.  those words were all I needed to hear to freak me out.  Another relative heard of a daughter's friend with a similar diagnosis who had a 'bag'  then more surgery to reverse it in 6 months.   I now have a bit of sinus and post nasal drip and cough and think this will make anasthetic life threatening! I also  have IBS which responds to every non stop anxious thought.  I am trying with the positive self talk but it only works for a little while. I guess another thought about anasthetic is being so helpless and lacking in control.  Any thoughts on this frantic ramble would be appreciated . I originally posted this as a reply to the above May posting but haven't had a response so am posting as an original post which I should have done in the first place.

Jellylegs,

Hope your consultation with the surgeon went well today. This must all be very scary for you. I don't quite understand from your post if you have to get surgery done or is that what the consultation is about today? I'll be hoping for the best for you. Hang in there.

Jellylegs,

I'm sorry that you have to go for surgery. I am afraid of doctors and any medical procedures so I can really sympathize with how scared and anxious you must be feeling. Whenever I have to do something I'm really scared to do I just try to think about a week or a month from now when it will all be over. Just think about how this time next week it will be over and you will be on the mend.

I know what you are saying about being afraid of the general anesthetic. When I had to get 3 of my wisdom teeth out a few years ago I opted to stay awake at the dental surgeon's office and have it done there with just a local anesthetic. Not a very fun experience.

Whenever anyone is about to have surgery done, there is always some idiot out there telling horror stories. If someone tries to tell you about so and so just stop them and tell them to keep it to themselves unless it's a happy story. These are the same people who like to share gory stories with women about to go into labour.

I know you're going to feel anxious until this is over, but just remember that this is a common surgery and the doctors are really good. I don't know where you live, but I'm in Canada and my uncle has had 2 heart bypass operations and has recovered just fine. You're going to be OK.
