Anxiety while driving
« on: March 24, 2009, 08:58:06 AM »
I'm having a real big problem driving lately, I always have but it's gotten worse in the last couple of weeks. I've suffered from anxiety for four long years now ,off and on. But my biggest problem lately is taking my kids to and from school everyday. I had a anxiety attack a few weeks ago while waiting in the line at the school to pick up my kids. Since this I've had big problems, in the morning it's not as bad because traffic is moving fast. But in the evenings while waiting in line(in my car) it really will set my anxiety off. It's gotten so bad that I will send someone else to pick them up if I can, it's a simple thing you would think but it's so hard for me. I've tried everything to get my mind off this fear,I will tell myself it's just in my head, it's going to be ok. I listen to music, I do anything to try to get past it, but I just can't seem to do it. I've always had anxiety while driving high ways, or for a long distance. But to the school is new, and it's really affecting my life. I feel so bad that I can't even see my kids off to school.

If your anxiety is starting to limit what you are able to do you may want to consider taking medication.  This happened to me many years ago.  Also, sometimes the bright light outside can make my anxiety worse so I always wear sunglasses while driving.  If you choose to not take medication you can also park in the afternoons and just walk up and get your kids.  I know waiting in line and feeling like you can't escape if you need to is anxiety provoking in itself.
