In Need of Some Direction
« on: February 11, 2009, 11:05:13 AM »
Good Day People, Happy New Year and so on and so forth

I am a Military Vet diagnosed with GERD while on active duty (or at least they thought it was GERD).  I was released from active duty and continued to have problems afterwards of waking up at night with heart pounding, nervousness etc..

I was given a Barium Upper GI at the VA and they found no signs of GERD AT ALL! Meanwhile I am still experiencing these symptoms.

The long and the short of it is I was actually having Panic Attacks and they thought it was GERD. I now have  the painful task of proving I was misdiagnosed to the VA.

I also read that Panic Attacks/Anixiety is often misdiagnosed at GERD.

I am just looking for some direction on this matter, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure what the question is, but if your suffering from panic attacks a good therapist and Pshyc Dr can tell you very quickly that they are indeed ANXIETY realated.

You could then take that information back to the VA.

I was diagnosed with GAD .. Anxiety... which in turn gave me GERD. The Anxiety came first and I had what you had. Waking up at night.. Heart beating , I got tingling and then started to feel sick to my stomach. IT got worse over a two week period and the 3rd time to the hospital they figured it out.. Gave me xanax to go home with and I was fine.
Make me see the doc in order to get meds. Now I am on Lexapro and Konolopin.  I have had no more issues but I suffered with the GERD for a couple months and finally that has now gone.
Good luck..
I saw a phychiatrist because they said its the only one to give these meds. YOU may want to try that.
