I really like The Shack by Wm. Paul Young.  It is a story of a man confronting God after his little girl is killed.  The twist is, God isn't quite what he expected.  It made me cry, which probably isn't saying much because a lot of books make me cry  :traurig001:.  I'm a softie.

It's an easier "read" if you buy the audio CDs.  :laugh3:

I also recommend the audio CD for Anansi Boys. The guy who narrates it, Lenny Henry adds so much to the characters and presentation.

Never read anything by Neil Gaiman but a friend raves about his stuff.  Did nearly buy American Gods recently....is that any good?

I would have to put that as my #3 book, or at least a tie with Anansi Boys. It's a different kind of story. Anansi Boys has a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy feel to it. American Gods has a sort of mystery/action/thriller feel to it. What makes it REALLY good are the side stories he throws in there about old gods coming to America. It's a VERY good story. Again, if you're interested in it try to get the audio cassettes, not available on CD. George Guidall narrates it and he is an incredible master of voices. Also, what makes any Neil Gaiman book good is his ability to portray characters. He is a phenomenal writer.

You can't pass up the book of short stories No one Belongs Here More Than You by Miranda July. You should also check out her website for some brainfood - it's called 'Learning to Love You More' (forum won't allow link post..)

Since we've already knocked off a couple of Steinbecks, I'll also mention Perfume by Patrick Suskind. It's a complete and satisfying meal.

p.s Awesome topic to post :-)

Everything i've read by Kurt Vonnegut so far is pretty good. He's such a wise 0104, it's great. I just read Cat's Cradle, and it's great. Though i would have to say my favorite is Mother Night, so far. And of course Slaughterhouse Five, what he's famous for.

Well, if I had to refer a book anyone would like it'd be Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, BUT...

I suppose that one of my favorite books is Feed by M.T. Anderson. I seem to like tragedies that have value...and this book had it. I didn't respect the book until a year after I read it. The first person really got to me...

It's a story about a boy in the future...a typical, no-thoughts-about-it kinda boy. And he falls for this girl...and he and his friends get a virus. Their feed is shut off for about a week. In the future...feed is like a computer in your head. Complete with entertainment, im-ing, advertisements...anything you can think of. No one needs to know anything, because...they have an instant google in their head.

But something goes wrong with Violet, the boy's girlfriend...and the virus has damaged her a little more than anyone else. And slowly, she is dying...but becomes too clingy...and...the boy shrugs her off. And slowly...the world begins to fall apart...ever-so-slowly.

It's an easy read, but the end is...so sweetly, softly sad...I loved the book...

Such a great book, but personally I thought Speaker for the Dead was much better. The psychology involved with it is amazing!!

anything by Eckhart Tolle or Jiddu Krishnamurti.
here is a great Krishnamurti quote:Truth is neither holy nor unholy. Truth is neither love nor hate. Truth is neither pure nor impure. Truth is neither simple nor complex. Truth is neither heaven nor hell. Truth is neither moral nor immoral. Truth is neither of the God nor of the devil. Truth is neither virtue nor vice. Truth is neither birth nor death. Truth is neither in the religion nor without religion. Truth is as the outside water flowing, it has no resting place. Truth is life
