autism spectrum disorders
« on: January 25, 2009, 07:44:54 PM »
I have Aspergers and noticed it is three pages back on this board and not sure how I will be received as many have a bad understanding of it.  Is there anybody else her with it or am I one of the few?  Anxiety is my major problem with both general and social.  It took me a long time to post this worrying about the reaction I would receive here.  It not something I generally advertise.  I posted in the intros with no response so I though I'd ask here about it. I worry about EVERTHING all the time even on meds well on benzos I sleep but that is about the only time I do, very well anyway.  Like I said any others here

Aww you shouldnt worry about any negative reaction here hun! Welcome! I think sometimes if it's a prob they arent familiar with or dont have themselves, then they may not know what to say. We are glad you are here and hope you find some information that can be helpful to you. I myself am not familiar with autism spectrum disorder but there may be some on here that are. Please keep posting and hang in there parts!!!!! laa43

I don't have it but I have a very good understanding of the implications.  Socially, life must be challenging for you.  But with appropriate therapy (language therapy specifically) you will lead a normal life.  In fact, many people with Aspergers are so passionate and engrossed with their professions that they become very successful at what they do (it has been said that Bill Gates is).

Most people with Aspergers have no interest in socially connecting with others in the same situation so I'm thinking you have a mild case.  Are you currently receiving therapy or seeing a psychiatrist for your anxiety?

I post on several AS boards.  I have also made it to adulthood and have a family with two of my three kids in the same boat as I am.  It's not easy but I get by.  Many on the spectrum what to relate to to other people but don't know how or really suck at it.  I am very passionate about my interests  and make a living from them.  Many are not so fortunate though.  Anxiety I have can be overwhelming at times with it being hard to even function

HI,

I see this is a January posting but I only joined a short time ago.  My nephew, actually my hubby's sisters' son, has Aspergers.  He had a really tough time from 12-14.  He is now 16 and seems to be doing better.  He does have his moments though.  I think his parents have been able to find the right type of medication and a pretty good way to parent him.

BTW  he was just awarded his Eagle Scout Badge about 3 wks ago :party0002: :party0006:

I hope you stick around this group.  I like it here

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

Something once interesting my Psychiatrist once told me was that alot of people have been mis-diagnosed with Aspergers.  There are actually lots of people who have been diagnosed with Aspergers or Autism but really don't have it. This belief of the individual that they have Aspergers can actually impede their social development, and this social impedement just reinforces the notion that they have Aspergers.

I understand what you are going through.  I too, have Aspergers and for me, it is very difficult to relate to people who don't have it.  I think that you should always keep in mind that it's not a disorder or a disease; its a difference; a gift.
