"End of the World", kinda nervous about it...
« on: January 19, 2009, 11:44:39 PM »
I posted somethiing about this in another topic, but I felt this warranted its own.

I was talking with a friend on Saturday and he brought up "2012", and ever since then I haven't been able to stop thinking about wether or not we're all going to die in a 3 years. I don't believe in any of that prophecy stuff, and the Mayans never actually predicted the end of the world on that calender of their's anyway, but I'm still concerned. People still talk about sun storms, and a pole shift.

The sun storm will appearently F up electronics and cause social disruption and everything will go to hell, or it won't be so bad and we might loose our cell phone reception here and there.

I've heard many different things in regards to the pole shift, some say it's a thousand year process that never affects us, and others say that it'll suddenly zip on the 21st and earthquakes will kill us all. I don't know what to believe. :dazed:

I don't know what to do about this fear. I can't just shake it off like I do with my health worries. Time heals all wounds in those cases, but here it's the culprit. I have no idea what to do!

i guess its kind of like fear of a heart attack or anything else
you can't control it
So just enjoy what your doing now
because nothing else exists but right now
and if you dwell on the past or future
you just miss it

I WOULD NOT worry about this seriously...google it, there is so much evidence to support that the world will not end 2012.

I just can't stop worrying about this stuff! I can't get over the fact that so many different things seem to correlate so well upon 2012. he Mayan Calender, a few interpretations of the Bible, Nostradamus, that Planet X stuff, and so on and so on. I can't take this!

As far as there being evidence against it, science always says they have evidence for or against something and then they are constantly finding out things are real.  Long story, so I won't get into that.

I personally don't "believe" the world will end in 2012.  But it's possible.  I listen to a radio show (have for over a decade) which deals with the possibility of pole shifts, mayan calendar end dates, ufos, ghosts, time travel, parallel universes, etc...  And I have a lot of old episodes.  It's all interesting.  Some is probably bogus and some is probably real.  But the Mayans, ancient Egyptians, etc... were all very smart about some things.

Either way still no point in worrying about it really.

I know there's really no use in worrying about it, but I have no idea what else I can logically do. When you hear neumerous people say that the world's going to end, and there's even a slight hint of scientific evidence to support their claims, then I can't think of much else to do about it other than worry. I don't know what good it'll do, but what am I supposed to do instead? How can I just go about living when I know there might be an exact date to when it's all going to end?

I can't get it off my mind, either. Everything is reminding me of 2012. Everything. Numbers remind me of the date, the sun reminds of the sun storms. It's impossible to shake off. When I look around at buildings and my surroundings, everything just seems so futile. It all might come to an end anyway, so why keep up the charade?

I know that's utterly unhealthy and irrational, but I feel completely hopeless. I've just been going through the past few days feeling shakey and numb. I'm just so scared.

Yeah I know it's not as easy as just "stop worrying".  Too bad it's not that easy though becuase it would be nice.  I don't know why I stopped worrying about it.  Maybe because I personally am Christian and although I constantly question things, deep down I still believe it and so I guess I am figuring the world will end with some people never dying.

Either way though, say something did happen to make everyone die, they wouldn't know it anyway because it would be so quick.  Honestly the main thing that scares me about death is if there isn't anything else, then I get very upset at the thought of "not existing".  If there "is" something else, I worry if it will be bad.

But when it comes down to it, really there's nothing you can do but stop worrying about it.  And you will probably just naturally start worrying less at some point.  Because if you think about it, there's nothing you can do to change the future anyway so why live being scared?

I am the same way thoguh.  Sucks to know logically what to NOT do and then still do it.

Exactly, also have you tried digging deeper into your spiritual self? you are worried of dying not existing, why not look into spirituality, it may help you feel better...Plus if we all go, then what can you do anyways?? personally speaking I am a Christian and I am excited for this world to end.

Yeah that's what I meant.  You just said it better.  lol  I guess I personally am still worried though, as I have trouble getting myself as strongly spiritual as I want to be.  I don't know if the OP is spiritual, but even if someone doesn't want to be that way, a lot of times as time goes by they do switch over to that mode I think.

Again, logically, I know that it's impossible for the world to just suddenly undergo some catastrophe, as all the stuff about pole shifts and the Milky Way are just unfounded and scientifically impossible, but then it's that "spiritual" side that gets me into the worrying again. It's like, if I can believe that a zombie carpenter died for our sins, then what's to make a hidden comet or a destined end seem far fetched?

I am not worried too much. I am too worried about my personal life to worry about what is going on "out there".

yeah I worry about these things often too...I know I shouldn't but I do. I'm Christian but I don't want to die. But as people said you could die at any time.

sexpistolsfan77,

I know this might sound oversimplified, but I think the problem here has nothing to do with the possible end of the world, and everything to do with the way you're talking to yourself about it. The anxious mind loves to throw worries at you and argue and wonder "what if?", and there's simply no way to win an argument with these worries. Seeking out certainty and going back and forth with yourself about it just isn't going to get you anywhere. No matter how remote the possibility of catastrophe, your worries won't let up as long as you keep the debate going in your head.

Worry is like being stuck in quicksand: the more you struggle with it, the tougher it is to get out. I think the best thing you can do is to learn to recognize your irrational worries for what they are, without judging yourself for having them, and then let them be without engaging with them. When you stop the debate with yourself, you start to break the cycle.

No

Although I'm still a bit weary of 2012, I've basically come to the conclusion that if we die, we die, and that's all here is to it. I mean, we probably won't, but there'd be nothing we could do about it if we were. Also, if you were trying to prepare for something on 2012, then you'd have a pretty hard time picking out which wacko doomsday theory to prepare for.

"Should I buy nonperishable food and stuff for when the government collapses? Should I buy a nice gift for Jesus when he comes to visit? Should I invest in a super-missle to destroy Nibiru before it gets here? Should I buy some really strong sunblock for the solar flares? Maybe I should buy a real nice coat for te ice age, perhaps? Or, should I just wait for the LHC to fire up and kill us all?"

(Note about that last one: It won't. Don't worry about that one...)

Honestly, it baffles me as to why so many people would make up so many nonsensical theroies about 2012. There's even a movie planned! I ju$t don't under$tand why individual$ would want to $care u$ like that....

well its is a prediction from a civilization way before technology as we know it was created. Although the predictions may be  be scary but when it all boils down to one thing, the world will eventually end. The earth has an expiration date, like any living thing. We could never accurately caliber when this will be. so don't worry about it, if its the end the world by 2012, then we should live now and stop worrying. I mean just thinking about this in a positive way makes my anxiety go away, cause at least all of us will all be together.

but i think nobody really know, all we can do is hope for the best.

The anxious mind will always stress on the uncertainties.  I feel fear just thinking about how bad this economy is and how bad unemployment is getting.  Sorry to drag anyone down about this.  Hope is all we have.  Prayers that things will get better soon.

I dont want to sound too harsh but I assume most people use this forum to discuss issues on anxiety, the symptoms and how we can overcome them to better our lives.  We now have someone discussing an irrational fear of the end of the world  ::)..I dont know about you lot but if these fears are actually very bad then my only advice is get yourself to hospital as soon as possible?

How anyone can spend day after day worrying about a "possible" end to the world is beyond me as someone else said we could die 10 seconds from now, but does that stop you living your life and aiming to complete your goals?  I doubt it.  Perhaps my views are a lil biased as I personally hav little to no fear of the world ending, if it happens it happens, wed be most likely gone in an instant, whats the big deal?  Perhaps you spend too much of your life doing nothing that you actually have the time to worry about this kind of thing?  Again as someone else said some people dont have the time to even worry about something so out there , because theyre just busy dealing with their personal lives.

So I would say if these thoughts are just more thoughts of interest on a topic that intrigues you then fair enough lots of scientific theories interest people to look further into them.  On the other hand if you genuinely fear th end of the world then I think you must have something going on in your head alot worse than GAD..
