anyone who exercises
« on: December 26, 2008, 12:08:09 PM »
I exercise pretty regularly.  I run on the treadmill for about 45 minutes 4 days a week and lift weights about 4 days a week.

I was just wondering if anyone who exercises, does your heart rate stay pretty high for a while after you stop working out.  I mean I know I get my heart rate up to about 165 during exercise, but when I get done, my heart rate stays around 90-100 for about an hour, and then goes back to my resting heart rate of about 65.

I read online that an indicator of future heart disease can be measured by how quickly your heart rate recovers after exercising.  Mine goes down to 100 like normal, but stays around 100 for way too long in my opinion.  Has anyone felt this or read about this?  If you have please let me know.

Dan,

When I exercise my heart rate goes up like yours and yes it will stay around 90 or so for about an hour afterwards.  During the waking hours when  I am doing things my heart rate is about 75-80 which is totally normal.

I don't think there is an issue there but if it is bothering you, you may want to speak to your doctor about it for reassurance.

I talked to my Dr. and a few years ago when I was really nervous about it he ordered a stress test, and everything was fine.  I just still worry about it.  We all know how we take medical reassurance lol.

I know Dan.  I would think if your heart rate stayed elevated over 100 for a long period of time after you workout that may be a cause for concern.  Just remember the exercise you are doing is a GOOD thing for your heart.  It's one of the best things you can do for it.  Trust your doctor.

I just wanted to make sure that it was normal for your heart to stay around 100 for about an hour after exercise.  Sometimes I don't think about it, but there are times where it makes me think I have a heart problem.  It does scare me sometimes.  I worry that I will be one of those athletes that drop dead on the field or while exercising.
