Schizophrenia?
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:54:09 PM »
Yeah so today i started worrying about leukemia/brain tumor/ brain anurysm because of a little blood after i blew my nose.. bloody nose might not even be a symtom of those but it got me worrying about them cause thought it was... but anyway so now I've moved on and I'm worrying about Schizophrenia. Now the only reason I'm worrying about this is cause it kinda just popped up in my mind and i googled "causes of Schizophrenia" i guess thats where i messed up... haha. but anyway it says social isolation which i've done for basically the last 3 years... depression and anxiety disorders.... can contribute... oh and stress.... which I've had alot of lately.

But I'm just wondering do you guys think I'm at risk for Schizophrenia... i really don't wanna go crazy.... I know its hard to make a real judgement cause you dont know me in real life but what do you guys think??

by the way. I've never dealt with anything traumatic or anything that would alters the way people percieve things... like getting raped or having a parent die... nothing tragic at all.

And i am going back to school next semester so if i can just not go crazy till then ahaha.... i'll be social again

This is exactly why you shouldn't Google to self-diagnose.

Social Isolation is a symptom not a cause...

Anxiety Disorders and Depression are often comorbid with Schizophrenia meaning that they are seen together, not that the former two cause the latter.

There is no evidence for causation of Schizophrenia from Anxiety Disorders...  That's like saying that being a Crazy Homeless Guy causes Schizophrenia.

Yeah i try not too... I've held myself back from googling a couple times so I'm still working on it.  Oh so since i have Anxiety and Depression now, i would already see signs of Schizophrenia if i had it along with them?

What about depression? can it cause it?

The bottom line is that you are not psychotic...  you could make a case for being neurotic (anxiety and depression were considered forms of neurosis when I took Pysch 101), but there is a big difference.  They taught us like this:  "Neurotics build castles in the sky; Psychotics live in them"

Are you hallucinating?  Laughing for no reason (inappropriate affectations)?  Hearing voices?  Have you lost touch with reality to some extent?  Do you have 'just anxiety', or is it more like paranoia that the FBI is out to get you?  Have you gone catatonic?  Do you feel like you just took a dose of LSD or Magic Mushrooms?

If the answer to those are negative, then you are not psychotic.

Define both 'it's in that statement.  I'm sure Anxiety can cause depression, and I'm sure the inverse is true.  On the other hand, I've never heard or read that either are causative factors in Schizophrenia.

The only one of those i can say yes to... is maybe I'm abit out of touch with reality... but not to a big extent I'm not sure how bad you mean but i do feel distant. and i may laugh at things other people wouldnt... not bad things though. like i wouldnt laugh at someone who was dying. but i might laugh at some things other people wouldnt find amussing but that doesnt matter does it?

I ment can depression cause Schizo but i think that answer is no....

But its that I'm worried that i will go physco... haha I mean can someone just turn PHysco or does there need to be a big trigger... bigger then having bad anxiety/depression and sitting in the house all day on the computer haha.

This doesn't sound psychotic to me.

This is common in people with Anxiety Disorders in general, and not just hypochondria...

You want me to tell you that there has to be some huge trigger for becoming psychotic, but that simply isn't true.  Last I checked, the biggest risk factor is a family history, but even that isn't sure fire.  There is a ~60% chance that the other identical twin will become Schizophrenic if the first one does.

You are not psychotic.  There is such a thing as a Psychotic Depression, but you don't have that or you would know.

For starters, you're quite coherent.

You aren't delusional, and the walls aren't breathing.  Patterns in fabric aren't moving, and you don't think anyone is after you.  Your neighbor's dog isn't a medium for the voice of God.

Yeah you're right. i don't think any of those crazy things haha. So i guess anyone can become physcotic then i believe what you say, but its just hard to believe there isnt a trigger something to make someone physcotic unless they were born physcotic.. like a normal person no anxiety nothing strait normal person cause just turn physcotic like that? the mind is a weird thing....

by the way how do you quote in sections like that?

I think the current theory for, say, Schizophrenia is that it's mostly nature but nurture plays a part.  Perhaps you have to be born with a certain predisposition, and the right factors can bring it out.  For instance, people born in the winter are slightly more likely to be Schizophrenic (but just a tiny tiny bit).  Obviously, the vast majority of people born in the winter are not Schizophrenic...

Yup.  Did you ever see 'A Beautiful Mind'?  Don't watch it till you are over this fear, happy ending aside  :winking0008:

insert the (quote) and (/quote) tags around the section you want to quote, using '[' and ']' instead of '( and ')'

Ever read Catch 22??

Seriously, the fact that you are worried that you may have Schizophrenia pretty much actually negates the idea of you having it.

It is incredibly common for people with anxiety disorders to start to worry that they are losing either their minds and/or touch with reality.

I will move this to the other mental issues folder anyway to see if you get some other responses.

Schizophrenia is extremely complex as are the causes which are varied and not just innate.

Psychotic episodes are only indicative of certain forms of schizophrenia, as is paranoia.  Most patients diagnosed with Schizophrenia manage perfectly well with medication.

If you were indeed going mad or suffering with psychosis you would have no insight into your mind state, you would feel normal only others would recognise abnormality in behaviour and thought patterns.

Googling will not give you the correct information most medical sites are inaccurate and unregulated.
