St. John's wort has been shown to be effective for mild to moderate depression--don't take it if you feel suicidal!

I have done OK on it for 2 years, but take care to take the right stuff at the right dose. You'll need three capsules of 300mg hypericin-standardised extract (i.e. 900 mg total) a day. The active compound is actually hyperforin--not hypericin--but SJW is not yet standardised to this. I found when I switched brands and inadvertently dropped the dose, I would experience mood-swings after 3-5 days. 'Herb Tech'  is my favourite brand.

I stopped SJW after my supplies were stolen in while backpacking in South east Asia. I experienced panic attacks pretty much immediately, so I doubt SJW would have any effect on these--I still had some supplies left when they set on, but they were triggered by that incident and subsequently higher state of anxiety. BTW suffering panic attacks when travelling solo sucks--and overseas emergency treatment can be very expensive--but that's another topic ;)

Magnesium and vitamin B complex. They help with mood.

Make sure they are capsules or liquid if possible as it is easier for the body to absorb.  The caplets are hard and the harder they are the less you will absorb before they leave your body.

thats what I took when I was medication free
